Why I Don't Post Client Reviews

A consultant I was just about to hire offered me an upsell. It was a subscription to a service that would let me approve client reviews before they were posted. Get a bad review, just nuke it before the app sends it to Google Reviews. It sounds smart. It is called review gating.

Review gating is a fancy name for unethical and immoral.

When she offered it, every hair on my body stood up. She would never hear back from me again.

It made me sit down and design my own systems for running an insurance agency. It made me reconsider a lot of how I do business. It made me want to draw a line in the sand and put ethics and privacy over everything else.

At the end of the day, she would never have to answer for the manipulation. But I would have to answer to myself for the breach of ethics.

Here is the question I keep coming back to: would you really want the world to know you just bought a large financial instrument? Every scammer, every solicitor, every person looking for a target knows that someone who just bought a million dollar life insurance policy has assets worth protecting. That is not a list I am willing to put you on.

"Yay, I just bought a million dollars of coverage from an agent, let me go online and broadcast it to the world that he was nice!"

If a client wants to share their experience on their own, I am deeply grateful for that. But I am not going to ask you to do something publicly that I would not do myself.

The only real review of a life insurance agent happens when a family makes a claim. Everything before that is just phone calls and text messages that went well. I hope they always do. But what I am really here for is to be there when your family needs me.
